M53 traffic: Motorway closed in Merseyside after man falls from bridge | UK | News

The M53 was shut in both directions between junction 2 for Moreton and junction 3 for Woodchurch, near Birkenhead, Merseyside. Diversions were put in place while emergency services dashed to the incident.

The man has been rushed to hospital in an air ambulance, reports the Liverpool Echo.

But traffic remains congested, especially on the southbound carriageway which is reduced to one lane.

All lanes have reopened northbound but it is still slow, particularly from junction 4 for Moss Hey and junction 3 for Moreton.

A tweet from Highways England reads:  “We have re-opened the Northbound M53 from junction 3 Woodchurch. Lanes 1 and 2 remain closed on the Southbound carriageway, but we have been able to re-open Lane 3 – Thank you once again for your patience.”

Alternative routes to reach M53 southbound at junction 3 include going through the centre of Birkenhead and out via the A552 or the local roads, such as the B5151.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm that emergency services are in attendance on the M53 today (Tuesday 15 June)

“At around 12.40pm we received a report that a man had fallen from a bridge at Junction 2.

“He was taken to hospital for his injuries by air ambulance.”
