Macron attacker jailed: Man who slapped French President sentenced to 18 months in prison | World | News

BFM TV reported the court gave Damien T, 28, a sentence of 18 months in jail. However, 14 of those months were suspended.

Earlier, he told the court in Valence in southern France, that he was a right-wing sympathiser who acted because the president stood for all he thought was wrong with France.

T attacked Macron when the French president was shaking hands with members of the public during a walkabout in France’s Drome region.

T said that several days ahead of Macron’s visit to the region, he had thought about throwing an egg or a cream tart at the president.

But he added the slap was not premeditated.

BFM TV reported T told the court: “I think that Macron represents very neatly the decay of our country.

“If I had challenged Macron to a duel at sunrise, I doubt he would have responded.”

Mr Macron said the attackwas as an isolated incident, before adding violence and hate were a threat to democracy.

He explained further in a news conference on Thursday ahead of France’s involvement in the European football championships.

He said: “There have been moments of very high tension and violence in our country which I’ve had to experience as president, during the gilets jaunes crisis.

“But society is in a different place today.”

His office did not respond to a request for comment on T’s courtroom remarks.

T faced a charge of assault against a public official, an offence which carries a maximum sentence of three years in jail and a 45,000 euro fine.

The president had been on a trip to the Drome region in the southeast to take the country’s pulse after the pandemic and with less than a year to go before the next presidential election.

Friends of T described a man who loved period role-play and was not a trouble-maker during court.

The prosecutor said he was not a member of any political or militant group.

T was arrested along with a second man from his hometown of Saint-Vallier.

The second man will not face any charges related to the slapping but will be prosecuted for illegal possession of arms in 2022.
