“She is coping amazingly well,” the source said.

They added that the Queen “has been comforted not only by the love and support of her close family but by the many thousands of people who had so many wonderful things to share about her husband’s life and legacy.”

The Queen shared a rare personal message on her 95th birthday on Wednesday, thanking the public for their support in this difficult time.

She said: “I have, on the occasion of my 95th birthday today, received many messages of good wishes, which I very much appreciate.

“While as a family we are in a period of great sadness, it has been a comfort to us all to see and to hear the tributes paid to my husband, from those within the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and around the world.

“My family and I would like to thank you all for the support and kindness shown to us in recent days.

“We have been deeply touched, and continue to be reminded that Philip had such an extraordinary impact on countless people throughout his life.”

The Queen was seen driving a Jaguar estate car through the grounds of Windsor castle on Wednesday afternoon as she prepared to walk her dogs.

She reportedly met up with a few close family members including Princess Anne and her daughter-in-law Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

The Countess in particular has been a great support to the Queen since the Duke’s passing and has often been seen visiting the Queen at Windsor castle.

Writing in iNews, royal author Jennie Bond, said: “The Queen has made no secret of the fact that her husband‘s death has left a huge void in her life – she has also lost the only person in the world in whom she could completely confide and, perhaps more importantly, who would give her his honest, sometimes brutally frank, opinion.

“She does, though, have a small circle of close friends who will support her in the months and years ahead.”
