Adalsteinn Brown, a co-chair of a Covid advisory panel to local authorities, said that current forecasts indicate that patients in need of intensive care could reach 2,000 in May, up from 695 on Friday.

 

Officials also imposed restrictions on non-essential travel from neighbouring provinces that will come into force on Monday.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the government would provide financial support for Toronto, the province’s capital city.

On Thursday, New Delhi confirmed over 217,353 new coronavirus infections, as hospitals struggled to cope with the influx of patients.

Exhausted medical staff have described having to turn away critically ill people due to a lack of capacity.

With deaths averaging around 1,000 per day, there are fears the country stands on the brink of a major medical disaster.
