Melania Trump walked arm-in-arm with a serviceman and stood apart from the president during the wreath-laying ceremony. The first lady was sheltered under an umbrella with the military man during the visit to Arlington National Cemetery.
The visit marked Donald Trump’s first public engagement since the election was called for Joe Biden.
Mike Pence’s wife also stood at a distance from him in what appeared to be a part of protocol for the socially distanced ceremony.
However, this has not stopped opponents of the Trumps speculating about a rift between Melania and her husband.
At previous visits to Arlington on Veterans Day, Melania has accompanied her husband more closely.
Sharing a clip on Twitter, one user said: “Melania is holding on to that man tighter than she ever would with Trump.”
Another joked: “Glad to see Melania has already found herself a new man”.
“Is that Melania’s new man?” quizzed another.
Others just thought the arrangement was “bizarre”.
One user quizzed: “That’s a bizarre photo: why is Malaria escorted by a marine?”
Another asked: “How soon do we think she will move out? New Years? Christmas? Thanksgiving!??”
However, others praised the couple for their appearance.
One said: “I love our First Lady she shows the best of America.”
The First Lady said: “The American people deserve fair elections. Every legal – not illegal – vote should be counted. We must protect our democracy with complete transparency.”
The president said he will carry out legal action to dispute the current election results and only an hour ago referred to “the mail-in ballot hoax”.
Melania Trump’s tweet appears to reinforce her husband’s claims, using similar language to Mr Trump’s press statement on Saturday.
He wrote: “Beginning Monday, our campaign will start prosecuting our case in court to ensure election laws are fully upheld and the rightful winner is seated.
“The American People are entitled to an honest election: that means counting all legal ballots, and not counting any illegal ballots.
“So what is Biden hiding? I will not rest until the American People have the honest vote count they deserve and that Democracy demands.”
Already, the Trump campaign has filed a lawsuit in Maricopa County, Arizona, which claims poll workers caused voting machines to disregard ballots.
The lawsuit alleges this is because of the mishandling of an ‘overvote’ error.
