Shark news: Teen survives horrific attack after 7ft shark ‘snapped’ leaving multiple cuts | World | News

The 17-year-old Jordan Hooper needed 22 stitches in his right leg to close multiple cuts. Mr Hooper was surfing last weekend in Ormond Beach, Florida, when the shark bit him.

He was swimming for his surfboard when he realised he kicked something in the water.

Mr Hooper told US broadcaster WESH: “It grabbed completely around my leg. The back of it is the worst.

“All of its teeth went straight through my leg.

“They said it could have been anywhere from a 6 to 7-foot blacktip.”

Mr Hooper was in the water for about 10 minutes and approximately 100 feet from shore when he was washed out by a wave from his board.

When he rose to the surface, he noticed his board was moving 30 feet away which he then swam after.

Mr Hooper added that he never saw the shark but knew straight away what had bit him.

He told Tracking Sharks: “As soon as I kicked it, boom! It all happened so fast!”

After he reached his board, he started paddling but the current in the water was too strong.

He did not make much progress reaching shore as the blood loss from the bite and effort to swim and paddle left him tired.

Mr Hooper said: “I became exhausted, and felt like I was going to pass out.”

He tried to alert his friends but they did not understand what was happening.

He added: “That’s when I realised I was wasting my energy, but I need to get on shore before anything could get any worse.”

He started to paddle again and eventually reached shore after a wave pushed him towards the land.

When Mr Hooper finally reached the shore an ambulance came 45 minutes later to take him to hospital.

He is the 10th victim of a shark bite attack this year in the Volusia County in Florida, but Mr Hooper said he does not blame the shark.

He told WESH: “I think, if anything, I kind of got in its way more than anything when I kicked it.

“I think it lost its cool and just snapped on me.”
