Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Ms Seibt believes a Biden administration would waste billions of dollars implementing the Green New Deal in the US, which she argues could ruin the economy. She claims the policy would be “shown off as a success”, even though there is no evidence to prove such a pact would improve the environment. Mr Biden, and vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris, have both demanded action on the climate crisis, and vowed to enforce the deal on their first day in office, should they successfully win November’s election.
Discussing the plan, Ms Harris said climate change is “an existential threat, and confronting it requires bold action”, before backing Senator Edward Markey and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s plan.
The Green New Deal calls on the federal government to ensure the US decreases the amount of fossil fuels used, while axing greenhouse gas emissions across the economy.
The pact, it is reported, will also hope to create high-paying jobs within the clean energy industry.
But for Ms Seibt, who has challenged the likes of activist Ms Thunberg over the climate change debate, the deal would be wasteful and could lead to major blackouts across the US.
The German agrees that carbon dioxide – which is a byproduct of the use of fossil fuels – does affect the climate, but she believes that the impact it has on the environment is blown out of proportion, especially by the likes of Ms Thunberg.
When asked by Express.co.uk what impact Mr Biden’s administration could have on climate change, Ms Seibt said: “The Green New Deal could be the US’ economic downfall, which is funny because Mr Biden has been posting about how US President Donald Trump has ruined the economy with his reaction to the coronavirus.
“There is Mr Biden who promotes absolute socialism in terms of the climate change debate, even though he has never approached experts on the other side of the debate.
“He should look at both sides because if you shut everyone else down, you don’t even allow for a debate, and then you can’t implement such strong economic policies.”
Presently, Mr Biden is planning to spend $2trillion (£1.5tn) on his climate scheme, which includes a carbon pollution-free power sector by 2035.
This will, Mr Biden claims, see the US achieve a 100 percent clean energy economy and reach zero emissions by 2050.
Mr Biden takes on Mr Trump in the election later this year, hoping to become the first Democrat in the White House since Barack Obama.
