The president spent three nights being treated at the Walter Reed military hospital after being diagnosed with COVID-19. During this period Mr Trump was treated with remdesivir, an antiviral medication, which he attributed to his swift recovery, as well as a number of other drugs.
In a video posted on Twitter the president said: “I want everybody to be given the same treatment as your president. Because I feel great, I feel perfect.
“I think this was a blessing from God that I caught it. This was a blessing in disguise.
“I caught it, I heard about this drug, I said let me take it and it was incredible the way it worked.
“I think if I didn’t catch it we’d be looking at that [remdesivir] like a number of other drugs but it really did a fantastic job.
“I want to get for you what I got and I’m going to make it free.”
Studies suggest remdesivir speeds up recovery times, and reduces the death rate, amongst those suffering from serious coronavirus symptoms.
The drug has been approved for use in the US, UK, Japan, India and European Union.
During his video address Mr Trump claimed his symptoms rapidly improved after taking remdesivir.
Dr Anthony Fauci, a member of the White House’s COVID-19 task force, argued it was not a suitable drug to take.
Speaking to the BBC he said: “We know that every single good study – and by good study I mean randomised control study in which the data are firm and believable – has shown that hydroxychloroquine is not effective in the treatment of Covid-19.”
Mr Trump also used his address to repeat his attack on China, which he’s repeatedly blamed for the global coronavirus pandemic.
The virus was first in China’s Hubei province at the end of last year.
The president stated: “It wasn’t your fault that this happened it was China’s fault.
“. And China’s gunna pay a big price for what they’ve done to this country, China’s going to pay a big price for what they’ve done to the world.
“This was China’s fault and just remember that.”
Earlier this week 7,500 fans crammed into the Wuhan Sports Centre, which was used as a field hospital during the height of the epidemic, to watch a basketball match as Chinese officials claimed to have contained the virus.
In total China has recorded 4,634 coronavirus deaths, far fewer than either Britain or the United States.
The US, with more than 211,000 death, has reported more fatalities than any other country in the world.
