Melania Trump news: How FLOTUS ‘helps humanise’ Donald Trump | World | News

The First Lady of the United States has an important role in Mr Trump’s election campaign, Director of the Democracy Institute Patrick Basham has said. Her presence in the President’s close circle shines a different light on him, changing how average voters perceive him, according to Mr Basham.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Mr Basham said: “Melania Trump is an asset to Trump on the campaign trail because she is popular with his base voters and she helps to humanise him in the eyes of average voters.”

But, while she can prove advantageous for her husband’s campaign, during her time in the White House Ms Trump has gained critics as well as supporters.

Mr Basham added: “Although popular with conservatives and Republican voters, Melania remains a relatively unpopular First Lady among Democrats because the mainstream media have generally criticised her from Day One, in striking contrast to the fawning coverage they gave, and continue to give, Michelle Obama.”

But when it comes to popularity within the Trump Administration, the First Lady is not considered the most efficient family member.

According to Mr Basham, despite Ms Trump involvement in the White House, Jared Kushner may have made the most significant progress among his family members.

President Trump’s son-in-law achieved important accomplishments in the Arab-Israeli conflict that will be serve as a reference for future presidencies.

Mr Basham said: “Donald Trump Jr is a very popular surrogate and effective speaker on behalf of his father among Republican crowds around the country.

“He shares his father’s enthusiasm for mixing it up with his opponents, both in speeches and media interviews and on his popular Twitter feed.

Melania and Me: The Rise and Fall of My Friendship with the First Lady, written by Ms Trump’s former friend and staffer Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, gives an insight about the First Lady’s role in the White House.

A source familiar with the book told The DailyMail that Ms Trump would roll her eyes whenever Ivanka Trump talked about becoming the first female president of the United States, whispering “no, thank you”.

The source said: “Melania would roll her eyes whenever she heard Ivanka ramble on about her grand plan on becoming America’s first female president with Jared by her side.

“Jared would ultimately chime in with, ‘She’s got what it takes, she’s a born leader, the people love her, look at her’ and Melania would mumble no thank you.”
