There have been no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries. The magnitude 4.6 earthquake was reported Friday evening local time and hit close to Los Angeles. The epicentre was 3km, 1.86 miles, West South West of South El Monte in California.
Seismologist Doctor Lucy Jones tweeted: “A magnitude 4.6 earthquake, 2 miles west south west of El Monte at 11:38.
“Almost the same location as the magnitude 5.9 Whittier Narrows earthquake in 1987.”
The 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake damaged many homes and businesses along with roadway disruptions, causing 200 injuries and three directly-related deaths.
Speaking of how the earthquake felt in Pasadena, Doctor Jones added: “Still getting everything processed, but it was a pretty good jolt here in Pasadena.
Talking about disasters and climate change wit
“The focal mechanism just came in, East-striking thrust fault.
“Just like 1987.”
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10.9 miles.
So far reports have been made of several items falling off shelves in homes and authorities are assessing damage done to roads, buildings and bridges.
