Donald Trump news: POTUS feared for life ahead of 2017 North Korea visit, Bob Woodward cla | World | News

The surprise claims come from Bob Woodward, a reporter who interviewed Mr Trump 18 times for his upcoming book Rage. In 2017, the US President was set to fly over to the Korean Demilitarised Zone to meet with Mr Kim, before bad weather scrapped the trip. Mr Trump eventually met with the North Korean leader at the DMZ in 2019 to discuss de-escalating threats of nuclear war.

The US President believed he might not have returned from the trip to the Korean DMZ.

According the tell-all book, Mr Trump “kissed Melania goodbye” before the scrapped flight.

He said to Mr Woodward: “I got up this morning, and told Melania, kissed her goodbye, and said, ‘I might not see you again.’”

Mr Trump also added to those onboard the helicopter to the DMZ: “It’s not that I’m worried about myself.

“If something were to happen to the president of the United States, it would be the worst thing that could happen to us as a country.”

But the November trip was cancelled as the President and his entourage were hit with bad weather.

The book details how the helicopter slowed as it approached the DMZ, with Mr Trump asking if “they know I’m coming”.

Mr Woodward said the helicopter pilot had to slow due to heavy fog, which he describes as flying through “pea soup”.

South Korean president Moon Jae-in was expected to join the US President, but had to cancel the visit for the same reasons.

Mr Trump and Mr Kim were able to meet face-to-face for the first time in 2018, at a Singapore summit.

The US President was also able to finally land in the Korean DMZ in June 2019, and became the first American leader to step foot in the zone.

In a letter dated July 2 2019, Mr Trump said to Mr Kim: “It was an honour to cross into your country and to resume our important discussion.”

But after two years of diplomacy, Mr Kim savaged the US in August 2019 for holding joint military drills with South Korea.

Mr Woodward’s book also contains 27 letters between the US and North Korean leader, 25 of which have not been revealed

The journalist also claimed in his cook that Mr Trump describes the North Korean leader as “far beyond smart”.

The US President told Mr Woodward that Mr Kim “tells me everything”.

In a startling admission of the assassination of Jang Song Thaek, Mr Trump said of Mr Kim: “He killed his uncle and he put the body right in the steps.”
